Many vendors hype the elimination of passwords only for you to discover in the fine print that they are simply masking user credentials stored on the phone or pointing to them in a central repository. This type of “password masking” is generally built to provide user convenience rather than stronger security. For example, on an iOS device, if a user fails a Face ID scan, they fall back to a passcode for authentication. Even on Microsoft’s Windows Hello biometric solution, if a user fails the biometric scan they’re presented with a PIN code for authentication.
It’s important, especially for enterprise organizations, to realize that password masking does not reduce risk. Compromised user credentials and passwords can still be used by bad actors to access an organization’s IT infrastructure through unprotected back end systems.
