Secondary authentication is a stronger authentication process, enforced when a risk is identified. It is sometimes also referred as multi-factor or two factor authentication. Using the mobile device together with biometrics could significantly improve secondary authentication across multiple channel applications such as web, kiosks, phone, and branch as most users do own a mobile device and most mobile devices do support biometric technologies.

There are three aspects to improving secondary authentication.

  • Reducing the number of times users need to go through a secondary authentication process
  • Making the process itself more pleasant for those who do need to go through it
  • Mitigating the risk that the authentication process is designed to address
